Background of the study
Christian religious practices have increasingly influenced indigenous ritual practices in various Nigerian communities, including Ekiti South-West Local Government. Traditionally, sacrifice rituals were integral to appeasing ancestral spirits and maintaining communal equilibrium. However, the spread of Christianity, with its doctrinal emphasis on monotheism and ethical reforms, has brought significant changes to these traditional practices (Ogunbiyi, 2023). As Christian ideologies permeate daily life, traditional sacrifice rituals face reinterpretation, modification, or even complete abandonment. This cultural shift has sparked a complex dialogue about religious syncretism and the preservation of indigenous belief systems. Contemporary scholars argue that while Christian practices promote social unity and moral accountability, they also pose challenges to the continuity of traditional rites (Oluwaseun, 2024). The study seeks to explore this dynamic interplay, critically evaluating how Christian influences reshape the practice, perception, and significance of traditional sacrifice rituals while examining community responses to these changes (Adekunle, 2025).
Statement of the problem
The encroachment of Christian religious practices in Ekiti South-West has significantly altered traditional sacrifice rituals, leading to cultural conflicts and identity crises among indigenous communities. The problem lies in understanding how the introduction of Christian ethics has transformed, diminished, or replaced longstanding ritualistic practices. This study aims to examine the resultant cultural dissonance and to assess the implications of these religious changes for the preservation of indigenous heritage (Ogunbiyi, 2023).
Objectives of the study
To examine the impact of Christian practices on traditional sacrifice rituals.
To evaluate changes in community perceptions regarding ritual practices.
To recommend strategies for reconciling traditional rites with Christian influences.
Research questions
How have Christian religious practices affected traditional sacrifice rituals?
What changes are observed in community attitudes toward these rituals?
How can traditional practices be preserved amid religious transformations?
Research Hypotheses
Christian practices have significantly altered traditional sacrifice rituals.
Community perceptions of sacrifice rituals have shifted due to Christian influence.
Integrative strategies can harmonize traditional rituals with Christian practices.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it illuminates the transformative effects of Christian practices on indigenous sacrifice rituals. Its findings will aid in developing frameworks that respect cultural heritage while accommodating modern religious practices, thereby supporting social cohesion and cultural continuity (Oluwaseun, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to exploring the effects of Christian religious practices on traditional sacrifice rituals in Ekiti South-West Local Government and does not cover other religious influences or regions.
